Hi,

I am researching the life of my Great Grandfather, I know that he served with Roystons Horse (i have his medal).

Are there any websites that have photos show Roystons Horse troops.

Also what was the uniform that they would have worn like.

Any information that would help me build a picture of what it would have been like would be most welcome.

many thanks

Allen

Whereas I can't answer your question apropos the uniform or photo's (there might be something in Tylden's but I don't have a copy) why don't you post his full name and we can see what else we can come up with.

Trooper Alexander C (Colville) Smith. born in 1882 Fettercairn Scotland.

Between 1901 and 1919 nothing is realy known about him other that he was in South Africa in 1906. when he arrived and left is unknown.

The photograph below is from 'Remembering The Rebellion 1906', which was published by 'The Witness', Pietermaritzburg's daily news paper. The caption is:
"Lieutenant-Colonel Jack Royston had fought in Zululand in 1879 and the South African war, and was in charge of his own militia of volunteers which gained a reputation for exceptional violence."
