The prints are so good (lifelike) that they could be used in a coffee-table-like book to punctuate text or other illustrations of medals, badges, etc. Have you considered this?

Yes I am really pleased with them, they look like they may have originaly been in a book.
I was thinking of framing them but I do like your idea, think I will keep them in the original folder and use them for reference.

Idly flicking on my computer (!), I noted that John Charlton was an artist of some considerable note around the latter part of the 19th Century. See Wikipedia entry. Most of his subjects seem to be "broad canvas" items; not charming snapshots as you were so fortunate to find.
There could be more?
