The Australian Anglo Boer War Study Group is having it's 10 yearly conference in Melbourne. Details below. I thought this may be of interest.

PROPOSED TWO DAY CONFERENCE ON THE ANGLO-BOER WAR
MANNINGHAM FUNCTION CENTRE, MELBOURNE,
26th and 27th OCTOBER 2013.

Saturday 26th October 2013: Talkfest:
Manningham Function Centre [Doncaster/Templestowe Rooms]

8 – 9 a.m setting up of display area.

9 – 9.30 Registration followed by informal mingling and an opportunity to look at displays, purchase books etc.

9.30 – 9.45 a) Welcome by Rob Droogleever [President ABWSG] and outline of programme for both Saturday and Sunday and to introduce Master of Ceremonies – [Neil Smith]

10 – 11 a.m. Speaker No. 1 Ross Taylor ‘Shattered ANZACS of the Neglected War – Government treatment of Boer War Veterans ‘ samples from the Central Western District of NSW.

11 – 11.30 a.m. Morning Tea

11.30 – 12.30 Speaker No. 2 Ryan Darby, ‘Aviation in the Boer War’.

12.30 to 1 p.m. Speaker No. 3 Dave George, ‘Boer War Gun Carvings’.

1 – 1.45 p.m. Lunch

2 - 3 p.m. Speaker 4 Robert Eales, ‘The Work of Emily Hobhouse in the Boer War’.

3 – 3.45 Speakers 5 & 6 Midge Carter/Trish Woodman, ‘Boer War Field Trips in Natal in the 1970s’ and ‘The Story of Emily Back’.

3.45 – 4.15 p.m. Afternoon Tea

4.15 – 5 p.m. Speaker 7 Geoff Doherty, ‘A Successful Deserter’.

5 p.m. Formalities end. [Neil S] Reminders for Sunday and Dinner later. Displays to be dismantled by 6 p.m. [Rob D]

Note that at 6 p.m. RSL reveille. All to Stand and have a minute’s silence.

6.30 p.m. Exit the Club






Sunday 27th October 2013: Field Trip

Meet outside in car park Doncaster Manningham Function Center at 9.30 a.m. Cars of Melbourne members can be utilised to transport those interstate members who need a space.

c. 10.30 a.m. Assemble at Melbourne General Cemetery: Visit grave sites of
a) Colonel Tom Price, C.O. VMR [Speaker: Rob Droogleever]
b) Major Tom Umphelby, 2VMR and 5VMR [Speaker: Rob Droogleever]
To be noted as we pass by:
c] Chief Justice Redmond Barry - Ned Kelly’s judge.
d] Burke & Wills Memorial
e] James Scullin & Walter Lindrum
f] Marcus Clarke – historian ‘For the Term of his Natural Life’.
g] Robert Menzies, Harold Holt and John Gorton.
h] Umphelby Family.

c. 11.45 a.m. Drive to Lieutenant James Roberts [1st Vics] monument in Parkville.
[Speaker: Rob Droogleever] Roberts was killed at Pink Hill.

c. 12.15 noon Drive to Shrine Precinct: Park and Walk!

c. 12.30p.m. to 1.15 p.m. [45 minutes] Lunch at local cafeteria?

c. 1.15 p.m. a) Walk to St.Kilda Road Boer War Monument to those who Fell in the Boer War. Go via Eternal Flame and Jacaranda Tree. Brief stop at BWM to read Bastiaan’s plaque, then
b) walk to Victoria Barracks [2 p.m.?] where the first units to go to the Boer War were assembled. [Speaker: George Ward] On the way point out old Police training sheds and the Domain (where horse riding trials took place) and Government House.
c) re-cross St.Kilda Road to 5th Vic Monument, [Speaker Max Chamberlain] then take steps [Boer War Day route] up to Shrine where arrangements for farewells can be made. Tea can be taken if desired.

Optional: An opportunity to visit the Shrine itself can be taken privately by interstate members – but an extra half hour would most likely be needed.

Expected finish c. 3.30 – 4.30 p.m.

Not sure about this exit the RSL at 6.30pm. That just would not be in keeping with ANZAC traditions.....................

Aviation considering the Wright Bros did not leave the ground until 1901, I am intrigued. See if I can swing a flight to Mel then.
