In my travels this past weekend, I stumbled upon a war game. It is called "The Boer War" by Erich Faust and Lew Fisher. It is copyright 1991 by 3W of Cambria, California. A little Googling yielded that 3W stood for World Wide Wargames, founded by a Keith Poulter in England in the late 1970s, before moving the company later to California. His company also published magazines such as The Wargamer and Strategy & Tactics (I vaguely remember having a subscription to the latter in the late 70s). I should mention that the game was a two for one, coming packaged together with "Defense of Rorke's Drift".

The game is strategic in nature, with each turn representing one month.

So my question is: Has anyone played this game and does it provide a reasonable simulation of the conflict?

Thanks,
Nick

Nick,

I often see this game advertised but have never played it. I cannot answer your question but would be very interested to hear the answer.

Best wishes

Thanks David,

I have to admit I'm not much of a wargamer like in my younger days. I no longer have the patience, attention span or time to wade through pages of densely typed instructions to then play a game that may take hours (I even have difficulty with Monopoly now, much to the annoyance of my son).

I confess I found the game in a booth full of "vintage" games at the annual GENCON convention, which I took my son to for family day on Sunday. I think it might be the largest gaming convention in the world . While the convention caters significantly to the Dungeons and Dragons crowd (again, not my thing), there is a reasonable presence of war games and I just couldn't wipe the grin off my face as I was examining the box. I decided on my third visit to the booth that I better buy the game or I would always be muttering "woulda, coulda, shoulda" since I suspect the game is long out of print.

I will try to have a go at it sometime, but it may be a while since there are plenty of competing priorities!
