David

Telecoms sort of runs in the family, my paternal grandfather was a Telecoms Electrician on the SA Railways (1920's to 40's), my dad trained as an apprentice Telecoms Electrician before changing to an Electrical technician and strangely I followed up the family tradition now going on for 36 years (strangely without prior knowledge of the family connection to this field of technology, until I started tracing the family tree a few years back!)

Hi

What a great question though. Some might immediately think of the most expensive would be the best, but most of us will know it is not all about price :)

That elusive Town Guard could come in a lot cheaper than that elusive KIA for most regiments and Corps.

I have to say for me, that it is either the QSA with single NATAL bar to Private Hunter, 2nd East Surrey's, KIA Willow Grange, or the Queen's Sudan Medal group, QSA with single bar Relief of Ladysmith, Khedive's Sudan Medal with bar Khartoum to Private A.H.FRIARS, Lancashire Fusiliers, the latter a great end to a good 2013 collecting year.

Anyway, wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and very prosperous and great collecting 2014.

Doug.

My best acquisition this year was the QSA (Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith) awarded to Trooper Gorton, Imperial Light Horse, who died of wounds after the Battle of Wagon Hill. Worn nearly smooth through frequent polishing by his loving mother, this medal might not appeal to the purists, but it was the subject of a wonderful research project facilitated by contributions from members of this forum, particularly Frank Kelley.

I would have to say that, during research on the medal group of Lt/Capt. David Lockhart MAXWELL,DSO ILH, my "best/most interesting find in 2013" was digging up information placing this very gallant Gentleman not only on the raid on Gun Hill 07111899 but also at the action on Wagon Hill/Platrand. Both of course during the siege of Ladysmith.
Doubtless, the then Lt. MAXWELL served alongside Brett Hendy's Tpr. GORTON.
Regards to all
