I have seen pictures of the xray equipment in South Africa but not one of the actual x-rays before.

This shows a Mauser bullet lodged in someone's left foot. No bones broken but the x-ray does show deformity in the toes.

The Boer War was only the second time X-Ray Machines were used on active service.

I have a couple of articles relating to the use of X-Ray's and the effects on the operators. In those days they weren't aware of the danger of exposure.
In my research I found that one of the Oldham SJAB volunteers was promoted to X-Ray Orderly.

I will try and find the articles.

James.

James

Thank you for posting a very interesting picture. I have tried in vain to imagine how the recipient of the bullet was positioned in order for it to end up where it did. Radiography has moved on since that picture was taken!

Regards
Brett

This picture, supposedly from the Boer War shows an x-ray of the foot and probably quite a lot of the rest of his body too.

A gunshot wound to the right thigh. The x-ray was taken by Lt Bruce and is from an officer of the ILH who was wounded at Elandslaagte. He made a full recovery and returned to duty.

The Times of 16 Feb 1900 carries a long list of gifts donates to the IY Hospital fund. In addition to quite a lot of handkerchiefs, the last entry records how the 'Ladies of Yorkshire, per Mrs A Duncombe donated a Rontgen ray apparatus and accessories. I will try to find out the cost of such a device at the time.
