TOPIC:

Was the position "Despatch Rider" an actual position within a unit, and carried on the rolls as such?
I have a Webley holster with the name John Bester, and Despatch Rider on it and wondered if that was an actual position and title within a British Army unit of the period.

From my Kimberley research in which 6 despatch riders were identified from MIDs, personal accounts etc, all of these men held regular Army ranks so I don't believe the designation 'Despatch Rider' was officially used on medals.

My Despatch rider was a Boer, I'm pretty sure now, possibly in the Christiana or Ladybrand Commando.
I wasn't concerned with medals.
His name and "duty assignment" is on an OVS revolver (holster, actually).

I assume there are no rosters, rolls, lists Etc..Etc.. no matter how short, concerning in any way either of those two Commandos. Right?
