This is a book in the National Archives, London, that contains the decisions made about how the QSA and KSA were to be issued. It contains a reference, date and the decision that was made on a particular subject. Sadly it contains none of the discussion that must have taken place to derive the decision, just the outcome itself.

My plan is to add the decisions as individual topics in this section of the forum.

I'm not sure how well this will work in the forum, but I'll try it and see how well it works. Any feedback welcomed.

Good Morning David......

This is fantastic..... Can the original letters that are referenced be found?

Hi David

I agree with Mike. This is indeed a fantastic record. From time to time, we must all have wondered about anomalies in the issue of QSA's and KSA's. Hopefully, at least some answeers will emerge as you reveal more of the content of this amazing book.

Hello David,

Does this relate to individual's medals?

As you know the medal rolls are littered with coded references to correspondence regarding the issue or not of a medal.

Meurig,

I had thought these numbers might be the ones that sometimes appear next to recipients' names in the rolls. Before seeing there reference numbers, I had presumed they were references to other medal rolls.

Some of the decisions are several years after the war ended but then I presume some recipients has to wait years for their medals. The '68' references could have been added to the rolls in Woolwich after the decision on any award had been taken.

I'll look back at the Natal Police roll as they have a KSA roll but no KSAs were issues.

Regards
David

David

KSA's were issued to a few Natal Policemen, most in complete contradiction of the rules.

You should look instead for a reference the the Natal Police and 'Elandslaagte' clasp. Off hand, I remember that nine men applied for the clasp and all were refused.
