These cannot be replaced.

Case of F W Moore alias Hurst. This was a case where a man pawned his Queen's and King's SA Medals and these were not redeemed in time.

In the case of Sergt T Thomas 67 Co IY who pawned his Queen's SA Medal in Oct 1917 and on 11th February 1918 applied for replacements, as the pawnbroker has lost it meanwhile, replacement was refused 18-2-18 (although the man had a perfect right to redeem and the pawnbroker was liable.

Hello David,
I always feel this sort of thing is very sad indeed, times were often very hard, then as now, a recipient sometimes pawned his medal to help feed his family, dark days! :(

The 20th Century equivalent of pay day loans?

They certainly paid a heavy price for not redeeming in time.

Good Afternoon David.....

I have a couple of medals in my collection where there is a Pawn Brokers number scratched on the back of one of the bars..... I don't know if they were ever redeemed by the owner or were just sold....
