Mike
That's the type of thing which deserves to be shown!
Well done.

Yes, I am aware of the Kosi Bay matter and our Trooper Forbes. I think I mentioned that on an earlier post.
Best regards to both

Hi
According to official returns the Boers losses at Spioenkop amounted to 58 Killed and 150 wounded.

It is interesting to note that on the page from the Boer Casualty Lists the names of a German and two Swedes are mentioned

1900 - From the diary of Major George Tatham, Natal Carbineers

Visited outposts with Col. Met three native runners who had come into our lines during the night with letters, etc. from Maritzburg. The three men had passed Boer outposts while they were asleep. They said there were few of the enemy between us and Colenso now and those few were not on the alert. Heavy fighting all day at Spion Kop and on Tugela. Unofficial wire from Spearman's that all had gone well and hill had been taken by Buller.

Further to an earlier marking of On This Day:
Queen's South Africa medal "F" rev., clasp "Relief of Ladysmith" impressed to "8962 Pte. J.Parry. Thorneycroft's M.I."

Killed in Action, Spion Kop, 24th January, 1900.
NFF Casualty list shows "Parny".
John Parry, home address 111 Field St., Durban and a well known soccer player, enlisted in E Coy., TMI on 28/12/1899 and was buried on the summit of Spion Kop.
Noted in the Natal Witness of 14/2/1900 as "a good type of the all-round man", IL has seen few, if any, better epitaphs.
(Sources acknowledged are "Thorneycroft's 'Unbuttoned'" by Droogleever and the compiler of the peerless City Coin's auction calalogue no.71.
Regards to all
IL.
