1900 - Colonel Sam Hughes, who was "dismissed from Boer War service in the summer of 1900 for military indiscipline, and sent back to Canada," received a public reception in Lindsay, Ontario, today, where he was the local Member of Parliament.
....Lindsay, Oct. 3.—The reception to Col. Sam Hughes to-day was in many respects a successful event. Fine weather favored the large number of people who turned out from town and country to welcome the gallant Colonel. His appearance was the signal for tremendous cheering. The procession formed and marched to the market square, for the presentation of an address by Mayor Smythe. At the conclusion of the address, Col. Deacon, on behalf of the officers and men of the 45th Regiment, presented Col. Hughes with a handsome sword and belt.
....Col. Hughes expressed his gratification at the warmth and character of the welcome accorded him. He would not refer to what he had done, but leave the recital of his deeds to the official reports. No act of his had brought dishonor to the British army. He had left South Africa without a mark against him, directly or indirectly.
