In Mafeking:

A quiet day. Flags of truce pass daily informing us of the condition of the wounded.

1900 - Diary of the siege of Mafeking by Edward Ross

Wednesday, 4 April

At 7 a.m. the warning bell rang.

It is to be hoped they have not been saving up their shells for a whole week on purpose to give us them all at once like they did on Tuesday (yesterday week).

No big gun fired.

Frank Smitheman, intelligence officer to Plumer, came into camp this morning, having passed through the Boer lines for the purpose of spying out the enemy’s position, etc. Very little news and very reticent, his position makes him so.
