1900 - Skirmish at Zoutpans Drift
1901 - "To the S.A. Distress Fund, Report of a visit to the camps of women and children in the Cape and Orange River Colonies". This report by Emily Hobhouse on concentration camps is published. With regard to the high fatality rate, she wrote, "Numbers crowded into small tents: some sick, some dying, occasionally a dead one among them; scanty rations dealt out raw; lack of fuel to cook them; lack of water for drinking, for cooking, for washing; lack of soap, brushes and other instruments of personal cleanliness; lack of bedding or of beds to keep the body off the bare earth; lack of clothing for warmth and in many cases for decency ..."

Simon Jones died on this day in 1900, and was buried with military honours in Johannesburg Cemetery.

...."In the course of a letter to friends at Newport, Corporal C. Pobjoy, of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion South Wales Borderers (Active Service Company), writing from Johannesburg Hospital, where he was employed in clerical work, on June 19th, says: - "We have had two Volunteers die of enteric fever. Their names are E. Powell and Simon Jones, of Swansea. I was working in the hospital when these two died. The first-named died on June 3rd, and the last-named on June 18th. Both were buried with military honours in Johannesburg Cemetery." The Simon Jones referred to was a native of Ystalyfera, and was the son of Mr. William Jones, butcher, Gurnos, Ystalyfera [Glamorgan]."

Hello Berenice
Private Simon Jones 2nd Volunteer Battalion South Wales Borderers, regimental number 7509
Medal roll dated 10th October 1901 Klerksdorp. Clasps Johannesburg, Cape Colony & Orange Free State. Entry crossed out , remarks, Deceased..
He was born in 1873 into a farming family. The 1881 census has his father William as a farmer. 1891 census has his father and himself as butchers for their occupation. Simon was one of 9 brothers and sisters.

Private E Powell 2nd Volunteer Battalion South Wales Borderers, regimental number 7515
Medal roll as above with same clasps and Klerksdorp date.
Apologies for lack of information on Pte Powell. Better info with a Christian name to search with, but alas, sometimes there isn't one available.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave
