From the diary of Lr Burne, RN:

A quiet and cold day. Called on the Dorsets and found that Colonel Cecil Law is a cousin, and very nice and kind.

1902 - James Atkinson, a St John Ambulanceman, of Foulridge, Lancashire, died today.

....DEATH OF A LOCAL AMBULANCE MAN IN SOUTH AFRICA. - News came to hand last week of the death of Pte. J. Atkinson, a member of the Ambulance division. Deceased volunteered his services last December and was accepted. He sailed about the middle of Jan., being connected with the Royal Army Medical Corps, and has done duty in the hospitals at Wynberg and Clanwilliam. At the latter place he fell victim to enteric fever. Much sympathy is felt for the parents who have been kept so long in suspense, as it was through the medium of the daily press that they first received the intimation of their son's death. He was reported to have died on Tuesday, June 24th. They wired to the War Office but did not receive confirmation of the news until Saturday afternoon. Comment on such inactivity is superfluous.
The Colne & Nelson Times, Friday 4th July 1902

A "plate" [probably a brass plaque] to his memory was later unveiled in Foulridge, but its present whereabouts is unknown.
