1901 -

BOER COMMANDO SURRENDERS NEAR EDENBURG.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION WAR SPECIAL.)
Edenburg, Sunday.......
....A smart piece of work was done by a party of Rimington's Guides on the night of the 4th inst. Major Damant commanding the Guides made a night march some 20 miles east of this place, and surrounded a Boer Commando stationed on a hill. At dawn the Guides gallantly charged the position on three sides. The Boers did not open fire until our men were within 20 yards. A hot fight ensued for 10 minutes when the Boers surrendered. The enemy's casualties were one killed and two wounded, one of the latter receiving a bayonet thrust. The Guides captured 19 of the enemy including Commandant Barkhuizen, whose bandoliers were full of cartridges. They also took a large quantity of small arms, ammunition, a number of field glasses and telescopes, 54 horses, and 20 saddles and bridles. Barkhuizen is a notorious Boer, who broke the oath of neutrality, and induced the Edenburg District Burghers to do the same. He was the leader of the commando which used to destroy the railway in this neighbourhood. The conduct of the newly enrolled men in Rimington's Guides is giving general satisfaction.
Derby Daily Telegraph, Monday 8th July 1901

The paper's report gave the names as "Major Durnant" and "Commandant Barkhurzen." I hope that Damant and Barkhuizen are the correct spellings.
