1900 -

....The Avoca landed 290 invalids from the Cape at Southampton yesterday. Amongst the troops was the first batch of invalids from the British prisoners released at Pretoria. In the course of conversation these men complained of the food given them by the Boers, and said that but for the kindness of British residents in Pretoria they would have fared very badly indeed. They, however, spoke very highly of the German Ambulance Corps. Private Harwood, of the 1st Border Regiment, who was on board, was one of those who have had the curious experience of reading their own obituary notice. He was struck by a shell and left for dead on the battlefield, but after the news of his death had been telegraphed to the War Office he recovered. Private Brazier, a well-known footballer of the Worcestershire Regiment, was also on board. He was shot three times at Slingersfontein, and lay on the ground forty-one hours before he was picked up by a Boer ambulance.

A look in Palmer shows two Harwoods of 1 Border; "5673 Pte. F.J. Harwood", severely wounded, Colenso, 15/12/99 and "2779 Pte F.W.Harwood" wounded, Spion Kop, 20/1/00.
However, one only Brazier of the Worcestershires; "3777 Pte. A. Brazier", shown as PoW, Slingersfontein, 12/2/00.

Many thanks for the reference to a Brazier, a Worcester at Slingersfontein. This adds to my knowledge of the skirmish.
Please keep the daily reports coming!
Cheers Steve
