The medical certificate is very interesting - I've not seen one before. In which archives did you find it?

The AB172 is just a transit document, it went with a casualty when being transferred between hospitals, surviving examples are found with a mans service papers.
In the case of the Highland Brigade, in 1899, these tend to be from Wynberg in the Cape to Netley in Great Britain.
