Gentlemen,
The Battle of Magersfontein took place on this day one hundred and thirteen years ago, a dress rehearsal for the 1st of July 1916?
A black day for Scotland, remember the Highland Brigade.

Hi everybody

The valour of the Scandinavian Corps at Magersfontein has fascinated me since the late 1940's when I was given a programme and other documentation dealing with the dedication ceremony of the Scandinavian Memorial Cross at Magersfontein by Gen Smuts on 16 Dec 1927. At the time of the gift, unfortunately, I collected stamps and coins and not medals and I do not know what other treasures the unknown lady donor had!

Over the past 40 years of medal collecting I have only acquired one ABO medal to a Scandinavian who had fought at Magersfontein. He was one of the few unwounded survivors of their epic stand and was subsequently taken prisoner at Paardeberg (listed as PoW no 4037 Peter Nielsen, 36 years old).

I salute a brave man.

Henk

Hello Mike and Henk,
I'm afraid the Scandinavian Corps is not represented in my collection, from memory, I think that the only example of an ABO that I could have bought was at the centenary sale at Spink, thirteen years ago now and that one went for a very good price for a single ABO, he was Burger Pontus Alexius Anderson.

Henk,
I quite forgot to say how much I like that superb ABO, a magnificent example, you are very lucky indeed!
Best regards Frank

Henk,
This is one of my own favorites to the "opposition" he is Hermanus Carel Van Der Linde, who fought at Magersfontein in the Potchefstroom Commando under Douthwaite's Field Cornetcy.
He was captured and made POW at Paardeburg (pow number 1351) following the surrender of Piet Cronje and sent to St Helena.
He was subsequently commissioned as a subaltern in the South African Horse in 1916.
Hope he might be of some interest to you, again, very best regards
Frank
