Christie, A.E. R.O. 452 – 28-04-1900 Long terms of imprisonment should no be awarded by court-martials in the field. When such sentences are given they should be commuted by the confirming authority (or Superior Officer) to summary punishment. Rules for summary punishment made under the "Army Discipline and Regulation (Annual) Act 1881" being an excerpt from the "Manual of Military Law". 1. Where a court-martial can sentence an offender to summary punishment, the court may sentence him for a period not exceeding three months to one of the following summary punishments, namely, (a) Field Imprisonment No. 1 or, (b) Field Imprisonment No. 2 2. Where an offender is sentenced to Field Imprisonment No. 1 he may during the continuance of his sentence be punished as follows:- (a) He may be kept in irons, i.e. fetters or handcuffs, and may be secured so as to prevent his escape. (b) When in irons he may be attached for a period or periods not exceeding two hours in any one day to a fixed object in such a manner that he must be retain in a fixed position, but he must not be so attached during more than three out of any four consecutive days nor more than 21 days in all. (c) Straps or ropes may be used for the purpose of these rules instead of irons. (d) He may be subject to the like labour, employment and restraint and delt with in like manner as if he were under a sentence of imprisonment with hard labour. 3. Where an offender is sentenced to a field imprisonment No. 2 the foregoing rules with respect to field punishment No. 1 shall apply to him, except that he shall not be liable to be attached to a fixed position as provided by para. (b) of rule 2. 4. Every portion of a summary punishment shall be inflicted in such a manner as is calculated not to cause injury, or to leave any permanent mark on the offender and a portion of a summary punishment must be discontinued upon a report by a responsible medical officer that the continuance of that portion would be prejudicial to the offender's health. R.O. 453 – 28-04-1900 All shoeing-smiths are to work to-morrow (Sunday) the regular every day working hours. R.O. 454 – 28-04-1900 "A" and "B" Squadrons will parade this afternoon at 2.00 pm mounted and in marching order as this morning. The Commanding Officer is not at all satisfied with the way the men turn out. Their equipment is not correctly put on, nether are the saddles properly fitted. The C.O. expects to see this rectified this p.m. Troop Officers will inspect their men mounted and afterwards dismount them to see that the saddles are properly put on. The haversack will be put on the men first under the belt, then the water bottle above the haversack and over the belt then the lanyards properly adjusted. R.O. 455 – 28-04-1900 The following transfers will take effect from this date vis:- Regt. No. 451 Private Macdonald, J.S., Regt. Staff to "B" Regt. No. 127 Private Thomas, C.F. Regt. Staff to "B" Regt. No. 352 Private Thomas, H., Regt. Staff to "B" R.O. 456 – 28-04-1900 Regt. No. 433 Sergeant D'Amour, G.P. is hereby returned to duty from this date.
