Orders by Lt. Col. Steele
Commanding "Strathcona's Horse"
Camp Lower Tugela River
13th June 1900
R.O. 689-13-06-1900
When hay is available at noon the system will be as follows:-
The cinches will be loosened as soon as the horses come into camp, hay will be fed, half an hour afterwards oats will be fed and horses should have finished 1/2 hour from that time. Nose bags will then be taken off, every man ready to mount and in his proper place in regular order.
R.O. 690-13-06-1900
When the "Advance" sounds the advance guard will move off the rest in succession. The pack transport will be in front of the rear guard. Markers will be placed as soon as the regiment arrives in camp, each squadron can be marched to the proper place without confusion or delay. The cooks wagon will march in the rear of the advance guard. The Quarter-Master and Adjutant will keep in front of the column so as to come into camp to attend to their duties at once.
R.O. 691-13-06-1900
It must be borne in mind to march without wearing the horses and men, half sections but be kept closed up. Officers commanding squadrons and troops will occasionally drop to the rear to see that this is done.
R.O. 692-13-06-1900
Farriers will examine the horses every day and replace any lost shores at once. The Q.M.F. Sgt. will be responsible for this.
R.O. 693-13-06-1900
The bugler at the head of the column will sound the halt before the dismount and it will be taken up from the front to rear by the other buglers.
R.O. 694-13-06-1900
All hands appear to be willing to do the work properly but unless it is systematized there will never be regularity.
R.O. 695-13-06-1900
The rear guard will see that there is no straggling. If anyone has to remain behind, rear file will stay with him until he is ready to go forward into his place.
Officers will on no account fall out without the permission of squadron leaders.
R.O. 696-13-06-1900
Advance scouts should keep in touch with the head of the column, they should regulate the pace accordingly.
R.O. 697-13-06-1900
It is fatiguing to carry the rifle at the advance for a long time. The advance guard must have the rifle in hand, the butt resting in the bucket, the barrel in hand.
R.O. 698-13-06-1900
"B" Squadron will furnish the advance guard, "A" Squadron the rear.
R.O. 699-13-06-1900
There is no excuse for articles being lost on the line of march. By proper inspection before starting it can be avoided. The rear guard will pick up any articles lost on the road. Steps should be taken to prevent the loss of ammunition from bandoliers.
R.O. 700-13-06-1900
The C.O. has noticed that the words of command of a number of troop officers and N.C.O.'s are very weak and badly delivered, this must be rectified. It would appear that the climate of Natal is affecting the voices of some of the Officers and N.C.O.'s to the detriment of the regiment.
R.O. 701-13-06-1900
Reveille will sound at 6 am tomorrow. Regiment will march at 7.00 am. Cooks to be called at 5.30 am.

E. F. Mackie, Lieut.
Adjt.
