Regimental Order -0-0-0-0-0- Orders by Lt. Col. Steele Commanding "Strathcona's Horse" Standerton, Transvaal 27th June 1900 Morning Orders No. 1 Watering O. C. Squadrons are reminded that an officer must accompany each squadron at watering parade. The Squadron must march in proper order as observed by other regiments in the camp. After watering, the men must be formed up and marched back in a body. No. 2 Patrols The O.C. is very much concerned at the results of yesterdays patrol. The O.C. Patrol, (Major Belcher) reports that there was a great deal of negligence, no proper supervision being exercised. Sectiond did not keen connection with the points intended. Some officers and men of the Corps got separated from the rest, in extending the line one of the squadrons seemed to have forgotten all previous instructions on this point. There can be no doubt in the mind of any experienced person that at least half of the men would have been taken prisoners provided that the enemy had been of any strength in their vicinity. When things of this sort occur it is quite evident that officers and N.C.O.'s are not paying sufficient attention to their work. The O.C. hopes that he will not have to draw the attention of the regiment to such matters again. Patrolling is very simple, if the rules are attended to and proper touch kept. No body of men is ever sent out as a reconnoitring force except perfect touch is kept, it is quite different to a patrol sent out by itself when they could act more in the nature of scouts. If Officers and N.C.O.'s would pay attention to the instructions of the superior officer in command of the patrol there would be no danger of such mistakes. Officers before extending a squadron for such duties must explain to all ranks what that duty is. No. 2 Mounts Should it be necessary to send a messenger from this camp and no troop horses are available and fit for the duty to be performed. Officers horses will be taken in turn commencing with the juniors. No. 3 Feeding It has come to the notice of the O.C. that several horses have been foundered owing to the men over feeding oats to them. The ration is quite sufficient for the health and well being of the horses and men stealing oats for over feeding only show a lamentable ignorance of the care of the animals. Any man caught doing this will be imprisoned and should the regiment move they will be put on some duty that will prevent them from going to the front.
