No. 2 Night Picquet

When men are on night picquet, O.C. Squadrons must see that better arrangements are made so that the men can get their breakfast immediately after coming in, and the relief must always be sent out at the time ordered.

No. 3 Reveille

Reveille will be at 6 o'clock to-morrow.

No. 4 Baggage

Tents and all baggage must be loaded on waggons and all mules inspanned by 7.30 am at which hour the regt. will march. The cooks must be up at 5.30 and the mens breakfast must be ready to 6.30. The Sergt of the Guard will be responsible that the cooks turn out by the above hour.

No. 1 Remittances

Men who are by any chance sent to hospital and are in a fit state to do so must at once notify the O.C. of their whereabouts and should any comforts or money be required by them they must apply at once direct to the O.C. and not through any other channel.

No. 2 Sick Parade

Sick parade will be at 7.30.am to-morrow, all men sick with any complaint of any nature whatever must parade for examination by the Med. Officer. The regt. is about to make a long march and any man falling out on the journey through sickness now contracted will be severely dealt with.

No. 3

Reg. No. 500 Cpl. St. George and Reg. No. 621 Pte. Bartram both of "C" Squadron rejoined the Regt to-day.

No. 4

Reg. No. 332 Cpl. B. H. Lee of “C” Squadron having been killed in action is struck off the strength of the Regiment from July 6th, 1900.

No. 5

Reg. No. 514 Sergt. E. C. Parker having been killed in action is hereby struck off strength of the Regiment from 30th July, 1900.

No. 6

R.S.M. Steele having reported from hospital will take over the duties of R. S.M. A/Sgt. Bullough will return to the Orderly Room from to-day's date.

No. 7 Picquets

No picquet of this regiment will come in until relieved, Officers are reminded that the relieving picquet must have breakfast and be ready to go out at the time ordered. This morning a very important cossack post was called in without being properly relieved, placed the Camp in a most dangerous position. An enterprising enemy knowing the circumstances could have destroyed half the command before the latter could have time to turn out to prevent it. The most important duties which mounted men have to perform are these, and the C.O. wishes to impress on all ranks the serious responsibility when on picquet.

No. 8 Muster Parade

There will be a muster parade of the regiment at 9 am to-morrow with arms. Muster parade of horses will immediately follow. All officers, N.C.O.'s & men must present, and the Officers will inspect the men before general roll call.

No. 9 Boards

Lt. Christie is detailed as member of the board stated in Brigade Orders to be held in R.H.A. lines to- morrow at l0am.

No. 1 Water

Water troughs with room for 50 horses to water at once have been established at the pools N. of the Camp. Units wishing to use these troughs will leave camp at the following hours (R.H.A. & R.E.) 8.30am, Noon and Evening with buckets. S.A.L.H., 9.30am & 4.pm. S.H., 10.45am & 5.15pm. Horses should not be allowed to crowd into the troughs, 3 large horses or 4 small ones are sufficient for each trough. Drinking water, water carts to fill from pumps below water troughs.

No. 2 Board

A board of Officers will assemble at the Orderly Room R.H.A. at 10 am to- morrow to investigate the circumstances under which certain articles of equipment &c were lost. President:- A Capt. S.A.L.H., Members:- A Subln R.H.A., A Subln S.H.

No. 3 Duty

No. 4 Clothing

In accordance with instructions received from War Office, the coats worn (British) that have been issued to the troops in South Africa are to be considered as "public" and not as personal clothing. Men in possession of greatcoats are consequently not to take warm coats out of South Africa (Army Order No.1 dated 30 June 1900). With reference to the above order O.C.'s units or details embarking for England or other stations abroad will arrange for the return of Ordnance stores all British warm coats in use of men under their command, demanding (in sufficient time to admit of issue being made), Great Coats or Cloaks for men who are not in possession of these garments (L. of C, S.A. No.6 of 16 July 1900).

No. 5 Places of Burial

O.C. units in the field will notify the place of burial and as far as possible the exact site of all men who have died during the present campaign or who may die before the close of operations as follows:-

If buried in Cape Colony to G.O.C., L. of C.
If buried in Orange River Colony to Military Governor, Bloemfontein.
If buried in Transvaal to Military Governor, Pretoria.
If buried in Rhodesia & Bechuanaland to Base Commander, Buluwayo.

No. 3 Complaints

The following extract from N.A.O. dated 1st August 1900. Discipline - "Several instances have recently occurred of letters being addressed by soldiers direct or through friends or relatives to Officials at the War Office. General and other O.C.'s will take steps to bring to the notice of all serving in their command the proper procedure for preferring a complaint, as laid down in sec. 43 of the Army Act and in the "Soldiers Pocket Ledger" . It should also be pointed out that the adoption of any method of bringing a grievance to notice other than that laid down in the Army Act constitutes an offence against "Military Discipline." The attention of all ranks is particularly directed to the above order.

No. 4 Promotion

F.Q.M.Sgt. McMillan according to Brigade Orders is appointed Vety. Officer of the Regiment with rank of Lieut. from this date.

No. 5 Divine Service

The Regt. will parade for divine service at 9.40 to-morrow those wishing to attend Holy Communion will parade at 9.20

No. 6 Patrols

The O.C. patrols to-morrow is to see that the horses are saved as much as possible and must be allowed to graze whenever practicable. Signallers will accompany the patrols and despatches will be sent by this means instead of forwarding by mounted men.

No. 5 Details

Whenever any corps has to leave any details behind, e.g. men in charge of sick horses at an advanced station before a sick horse depot has been established, they are invariably to be furnished with a paper stating the duty on which they have been detailed and to receive orders to present themselves daily with this order to the Commandant of the Station at which they may be, who will issue the orders for them to rejoin their regt. as soon as practicable. The Commandant will endorse the original order stating the date on which he has ordered them to rejoin their corps and thus any delay can be traced.

Regt. Orders Continued: After Order:

R.Q.M.S. Crafter has been detailed to remain at Standerton until further orders. His duties will be to look after all stores and property belonging to this regiment and stores and equipment and public property issued to this regiment. He will also write up and keep posted the Q-Master' s stores and straighten out all vouchers &c. During his absence the work of R.Q.M.S. will be done by Reg. No. 436 S.Q.M.S. Harding.

No. 4 Rejoining

It has been brought to the notice of the c.o. and N.C.O. 's and men are being returned to duty from hospital and other sources and no report to their rejoining the regiment was sent to Headquarters. This has caused needless trouble with regard to official papers and also mail matter and in future S.S. Majors will be held responsible that a recurrence of this does not take place. N.C.O.s and men returning from hospital will parade before the medical officer the following morning and be returned to duty by him.

Fisher No. 93, one revolver stamped No.3335, one revolver holster marker c. Fisher No. 93, one bayonet stamped 68. O.C. Squadrons will have their lines searched for the same.

No. 4 Transfer

Lt. Kyle is transferred from "A" Squadron to the Machine Gun Battery from this date. He will take with him his horse ans saddlery.

In accordance with Field Army Orders which have been issued to the O.C.s, the force will move to-morrow in the following order I the leading regiment starting punctually at 7 am., the remainder following in their place in columns. S.H., "A" Battery R.H.A., Corps Artillery, 2 Squadrons S.A.L.H., No. 18 B.F. Hospital, H-Q baggage, 2nd Line Baggage, 3rd Mounted Brigade 2nd line baggage Corps Artillery, Supply Column, 3rd Mtd Bdg, Corps troop ammunition column, Corps troop supply column, 4 Squadron S.A.L.H. The whole of the baggage and supply columns will be under Capt. Denny, A.S.C. Should move in as broad a front as possible. The G.O.C. is particularly anxious that units should drop into their place punctually and that no gaps are left in the column.

With reference to L of C orders No. 254 of 10 July 1900 para 4 the rules for discharge from Irregular Corps therein mentioned apply also to S.A.L.H. and Corps of Imperial Guides.

No.2. Washing

No washing will be permitted near the places set apart for drawing drinking water or watering animals. Washing may take place from buckets not less than 50 yards from the back of the Spruit or in pools in the Spruit N.W. of the town below the point where the Spruit which crosses the New Ermelo road joins the main Spruit.

No. 3

The O.C. noticed that on the arrival of the regt. in camp yesterday and on other occasions that after the horses were put on the lines a great many of the men strayed from the Camp. This is entirely against orders and the N.C.O.s are greatly to be blamed that it should have occurred. The men by going away not only lay themselves open to severe punishment but are apt when absent to throw their duty upon a comrade, which is neither honest or soldierly. Last night it entailed a patrol of 30 men to bring in the absentees; this was an extra duty and if orders had been carried out would not have been required.

No. 4 Boer Property

The men are cautioned against useless and wanton destruction of property belonging to the enemy or otherwise. It is an important matter that the status of the Corps should be of the highest grade and it behooves every individual N.C.O. & man to protect and maintain by upright dealing and good conduct the good name the regiment already has obtained among the higher authorities. The C.O. wishes to express his gratification of the compliment passed him by the G.O.C., on the scouting capabilities and general bearing of the men of his command yesterday

No. 5

The horses as checked over and detailed by Major Belcher at Paardekop will retained by the Squadrons. Each Squadron Officer will be responsible for the horses in his Squadron.

No. 6

Horse Reg. No. S.H.235 was detailed to “C" Squadron through some error at Watervaal, the horse had previously been in the sick lines and was sent to "C" Squadron as a remount. It will remain with the Squadron as a troop horse until further orders. The horse originally belonged to “B" Squadron and a Boer pony, black gelding has been detailed to replace it.

No. 7

It has been brought to the notice of the C.O. that there is a great deal of carelessness in tying horses on the lines. As officers Comdg Sqdns are responsible for the horses in their lines they must see that they are properly tied and should prevent horses getting loose and wandering around. It is the duty of every N.C.O. and man in the regiment should a horse get loose to find out where it belongs and turn it over.

With reference to Field Order 152 of this date issued herewith the Bdg will march to-morrow at 7.am in the following order:- Strathcona's Horse, "A" Battery R.H.A., No. 2 Field Troop R.E., S.A.L.H. The regt. baggage will be formed up packed ready to move off at 7.20am punctually. No. 18 B.F.H. will move with 2nd line transport and should be at the spot where the R.H.A. are encamped by 7.20am.

The march will continue to-morrow to the Vaal under the same arrangement as to-day viz 3rd Mtd Bdg will cover front and right flank. The Bdg will march at 8am. Order of march:- S.A.L.H., "A" Bty R.H.A., S.H. O.C., S.A.L.H. will send out scouts to the front and right flank at daybreak. No. 2 Field Troop R.E. will proceed with advance guard to a drift on the road which requires making good and which will be pointed by Maj. Elliott R.E. The troops encamped with Genl. Lytleton (3 miles ahead) march at 9 am and follow the main road. We march parallel to the main road on the right of it. Hospital baggage and supply column will march in the'same order as today to be ready to move off at 9am.

No. 1 Occupation Entering of Buildings

(1) Several cases having been brought to notice in which buildings have been occupied or entered without authority, it is to be clearly understood that a written permission signed by the Staff Officer of the General Commanding such force must be obtained in future before any building is occupied or entered.

(2) Natives are not allowed to enter any buildings or farm yards under any pretext whatever. All native followers are to be made acquainted with this order and all officers and N.C.O.s are to be instructed to have any natives seen disregarding it brought before the Provost Marshall, and Asst. P.M. or the man's Commanding Officer.
