Herewith are a couple of pics I took back in the late 80's/early 90's of a rather nice 15 pdr Field Gun emplaced at Ross; a small very historic town in the Tasmanian midlands.

Hello Ian,
I always enjoy seeing this sort of thing, getting a rather unusual sight these days with the passage of time, you very seldom see such large pieces actually on display in public places, so many local governments are under huge financial pressure in these hard times, pieces are often sold off.

There are a number of period artillery pieces here, round and about. Some of them date back to the Crimea! There is a nice Boer 75mm gun elsewhere in Sydney and when I next go there I will post some pics.

Hello Ian,
We do have a great many pieces here, but, they tend to be in museums rather than public places, but, sadly even these are not always safe, the RA museum at Woolwich may have to close soon.

Hello Ian

Yes, great to see.

I have an unfinished paper on the collection and distribution of these "trophy guns". There was, on occasion, competition in battle to claim a captured Boer gun.

One day I will finish and publish.

I would not be surprised to see that a field gun ID'd by number can be associated with the area from which the capturers came; (clumsy phrasing - but intent clear!). When I get over to take pics of the 75mm Boer gun in Sydney, I will ascertain the issue number/id number and we might be able to learn a bit more about it.
Kind regards -and glad you liked the pics.
