In Preston Cemetery, Lancashire.

Henry James Spencer. Killed at Clanwilliam, South Africa, 1 January 1902, aged 28. There was a skirmish at Clanwilliam on 23rd December 1901 - was he fatally wounded there and then?

ABW name search has a (3584) Sergeant H.J. Spencer of the 16th (The Queen's) Lancers. QSA (5). Danger Wound, nr Doorn River, 20 Dec 01. Died 01 Jan 02. Source: QSA medal rolls The same man?



His brother was (8243) Corporal Joseph Ignatius Spencer, 1st King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). Killed in action in France on 6th May 1915, aged 30. Son of John George Spencer and Alice Ellen Spencer. The CWGC database gives his date of death as 2nd May 1915.

Another good find.

The Boer War Register confirms the same man, wounded 20-12-1901 and died 01-01-1902.
