Situated on rising ground in beautifully maintained Parramatta Park, is a SOLDIER'S MEMORIAL; dedicated to fallen members of NSW Contingents in the ABW. Interestingly, the memorial is situated very close to the original site of Govener Phillip's redoubt; constructed 02/11/1788 and the first building in Parramatta.
The memorial stone of the SOLDIER'S MEMORIAL was laid by L/Col. C.F.Cox, CB, Commander, Aldershot Detachment; the first overses Colonial troops in the Empire to reach the seat of war. The memorial itself is fashioned from four Doric columns and base stones from the original Parramatta Court House; the columns arranged about a classical broken pillar - representing "life broken short". The gun atop the memorial is a 9lb field gun acquired by NSW in 1856 for the defence of Port Jackson. Several years after the memorial's construction, it was flanked by two large bronze guns of similar vintage to the one atop the memorial.

Ian

Thank you for showing another excellent Boer War memorial. I doubt that there is one in South Africa that compares in grandeur and historic associations.
