Charles Christopher Wood served in the Protectorate Regt as Trooper 104 in C Sqn. The Mafeking Siege Register by Colin Wilson tells us that two Wood Brothers served during the Siege; Charles was wounded on 26121899 and BPs Staff Diary says that the other Brother (Arthur) returned to the battelfield and stood guard until arrested by the Boers and was dragged away from his Brother - who subsequently died. Charles' grave is reported as being in Mafeking cemetery; together with an obelisk.

IL.

Nice photos, thanks.

There were three men named Wood in the Protectorate Regiment in the siege with consecutive numbers:

102 Arthur Frederick
103 Alfred Joseph
104 Christopher Charles

103 Alfred was killed on 26-12 as well - not noted in the Siege Register, but in SAFF, Watt and noted on medal roll. Presumably Alfred was not a brother (cousin or coincidence?) despite the consecutive numbers suggesting family members enlisting together.

I would agree that Arthur wasn't Charles' brother, otherwise he'd also be named on the plaque as being the vicar's grandson.

(Took 8 months for me to realise this!)
