While on holiday recently I found this Boer War memorial to a local RE man. The inscription reads:

Sacred to the Memory of Spr Frederick Albert Jelly, Telegraphist RE
The Beloved son of Sgt Maj Frederick and Grace Jane Jelly
Who Died of Enteric Fever in Charlestown Natal
While Serving his Country in the South African War
On the 16th February 1902 Aged 19 Years

A Devoted Son, Loving Brother and Affectionate Friend

This Memorial Erected by his Sorrowing Parents and Friends is Put Near the
Place He Occupied as a Chorister of this Church for Several Years

In the Register of Soldiers Effects he appears as F A Jelley Spr 1729 1st Telegraph Division RE, born in what looks like Fermoy. The 1901 census shows him at Brompton Barracks in Kent with the RE born Ireland. Ten years earlier the family were residents of Docking in Norfolk, with Fred Jelly senior, aged 45, a Sgt Instructor with '3 V B N R' which I assume is 3rd Volunteer Btn Norfolk Regt. According to the Anglo-Boer Roll on FMP his name is also on the Castle Meadows County Memorial, Norwich, Norfolk.
