Accidentally killed on duty near Frankfort, South Africa, on April 8th 1902, aged 32.

In St James' churchyard, Calderbrook, about 4 miles north-east of Rochdale.


SERGEANT JOSEPH H. SMITH
OF THE FIRST EAST LANCASHIRE REGIMENT
WHO WAS ACCIDENTALLY KILLED ON DUTY
NEAR FRANKFORT, SOUTH AFRICA,
APRIL 8TH 1902, AGED 32 YEARS.

Another lovely memorial, thanks Berenice.

Interesting, on the memorial in Rochdale Town Hall he is "David Smith", on the QSA and KSA rolls his initial is clearly 'D'. The KSA roll shows 'Deceased', so this is the same man.

'Red Roses On The Veldt' confirms this and gives the place of death as Dundas Farm Post, with the cause being "accident."

I suspect Red Roses draws from the same sources. I have just checked local newspapers also report him as "David Smith". No trace in Soldier's Wills.
