Cheers for that. I see that the inscription says that he was a Captain in the South African Constabulary. Would that be compatible with him being a Major in the Royal Grenadiers?

Berenice,
It was not uncommon for Imperial officers to be loaned out to local units. When you look at the medal rolls for local units, the first couple of pages contain the officers and the regiments from which they originate.
