Baddies have better ways of identifying items they hope to steal than by consulting this forum, but just imagine how guilty you would feel if there was a coincidental burglary at the museum in question!

I am not to worried about baddies but have had 4 different families contact me asking for their granddads medals back......

After I'd posted a photo of a WW1 soldier's funeral silk, on display in a museum, I had descendants contact me, wanting to know how the museum had gotten hold of it. I asked the museum and the reply was that a relative of the soldier had donated the silk, with the condition of anonymity for the donor.

Families can indeed be problematical when it comes to disposing of inheritances. Several years ago a Boer War VC group was consigned for sale by one branch of a local family, but another objected. In that instance the sale went ahead, but I suspect the family remains divided. More recently, the medals, uniforms and other items that had belonged to Natal's most famous soldier (but now a much maligned one) were offered for sale, but then withdrawn after a family objection. The VC group is now safe in the UK, but the General's relics face an uncertain future.
