TO THE GLORY OF GOD
AND IN MEMORY OF
JOHN CLEMENT MORRISON
AND
WILLIAM LOGIE LLOYD FITZWILLIAMS
THEY JOINED THE VOLUNTEER BATTALION
OF THE PRINCESS LOUISE
ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS
FOR SERVICE IN SOUTH AFRICA, 1900-01
AND DIED FROM FEVER.
THE FORMER AT HEILBRON, SOUTH AFRICA,
ON 24. JUNE 1900, AGED 24 YEARS,
AND THE LATTER AT NETLEY HOSPITAL,
ON 20. MAY 1901, AGED 22 YEARS.

"GOOD SOLDIERS"

THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY THEIR
FELLOW MEMBERS OF THIS CHURCH
AND THEIR COMRADES IN THE
LOCAL RIFLE VOLUNTEERS.

JANUARY 1902.

The coat-of-arms at bottom right is that of Dunbartonshire Volunteers. The inscribed letters at the right and bottom, and the coat-of-arms, are slightly faded, compared to the rest of the plaque, the reason being that that area is adjacent to a doorway and passers-by, over the years, have brushed against the plaque there.

The coat-of-arms of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

The ABW plaque is at the far right.

The large plaque to the left is dedicated to the memory of Captain Charles Findlay, 1st Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, who was killed in action at the Battle of Atbara, on 8th April 1898, during the Sudan Campaign.

Good heavens, you certainly do get out and about, those are really superb works of art in their own right as well as actually commemorating those who fell victim to the ravages of the wretched war, I like in particular the "Good Soldiers" towards the lower edge.

Well, I do love to travel and visit new places, so opportunities to photograph war memorials, particularly ABW, give me the incentive to get out and about, especially now I get reductions on train travel.

Excellent, many thanks Berenice.

Fitzwilliams was born in west Wales and is commemorated in Cardiff, Carmarthen and Christ College, Brecon - the latter is my alma mater. I spent many a Sunday in Chapel reading and re-reading his memorial plaque.

Any idea how he came to be remembered in Dumbarton?
