You have trained your son well! Now that my younger son lives in a more congenial environment in England, he too has developed interests that suit mine. I will alert him to watch for memorials in the out-of-the-way places he visits.

Brett,

That sounds a great idea. I was thinking that we should create a master list of memorials and then tick them off as they are visited and recorded. I was not aware of the two memorials in Edinburgh and stumbled on them by chance. There was a previous thread about the Scottish Horse memorial in Edinburgh but there may be others too.

Best wishes
David

There are even surprises to be found in South Africa. Until recently, I did not know that there is a Norwegian Settlers Cemetery in Port Shepstone on the Natal South Coast, and I was amazed to find that the Cemetery includes a memorial to the men of the Border Mounted Rifles who died during the Boer War - not just the Norwegians and not just the men from Port Shepstone, but a proper memorial to all the casualties in southern Natal's volunteer regiment. There may be other similar memorials specifically for local regiments in the Boer War elsewhere in South Africa, but I do not know of them.
The BMR memorial features in the Genealogical Society of South Africa's 'Gravestone Project', but it is a view of one side only and it is copyrighted, so I am arranging for someone to photograph all sides and I will then post the results on this site.
Regards
Brett
