Situated on East Esplanade, Manly, NSW (Manly being a beach-side suburb of Northern Sydney) is the following memorial:
"27 Tpr. Henry Martin Budd" (a former cab driver) volunteered for service in South Africa as a member of the NSW Infantry Company. Upon his unit being converted to Mounted Rifles, he became a member of "E" Sqn., 1st NSW MR. He Died of Disease (enteric) at Naauwpoort, 18/3/1900.
"1370 Tpr. Stanley Lipscomb" was a member of "D" Coy., NSW Imperial Bushmen and Died of Disease at Mafeking, 19/6/1901.
Troopers Budd and Lipscomb both came from the village of Manly (as it then was).
The broken column apparently signifies "life cut short".
Another face of the memorial commemorates a life-saving incident; which does not relate to the South African campaign.
