Situated in the grounds of the Barracks of the 1st/15th Royal New South Wales Lancers in Parramatta is a Memorial panel naming six members of the New South Wales Lancers who either died on Service in South Africa or else succumbed to illness on the way home. I have taken the liberty of adding some brief biographical details in each case.
"755 Cpl. Frederick Isaac Kilpatrick" - killed in action at Slingersfontein, 6/3/00.
(there is some confusion in sources as to the correct date of this action).
Cpl. Fitzpatrick's QSA bore the clasp "Cape Colony".
"891 Tpr. Walter Melrose Ellis" - died aboard Ship on the way home.
Tpr. Melrose's QSA bore the clasps "Cape Colony", Orange Free State", "Johannesburg", Diamond hill", "Belfast".
"599 Tpr. Franz Gustav Fetting" - died of enteric fever, Bloemfontein, 8/5/00
Tpr. Fetting's QSA bore the clasps "Cape Colony', "Paardeburg", "Dreifontein".
"67 Cpl. Rowland Edward Harkus" - died of enteric fever, Bloemfontein, 4/4/00.
(surname incorrectly shown as "Harkers" in SAFF)
Cpl. Harkus' QSA bore the clasps "Cape Colony", "Paardeburg", "Dreifontein".
"507 Tpr. Frederick Avard" - wounded as his unit was about to re-enter Caroline on 4/9/00 and he died on 10/10/00.
Tpr. Avard's QSA bore the maximum number of clasps: "Belmont", "Modder River", "Relief of Kimberley", "Paardeburg", "Dreifontein", "Johannesburg", Diamond Hill", "Belfast".
"879 Tpr. Leslie Dagworth Tunks" - died of enteric fever upon either 2/6/00 or 21/6/00 at Kroonstad.
(SAFF shows the unit as being NSWMI; Murray confirms NSWL)
Tpr. Tunks' QSA bore the clasps "Cape Colony" and "Orange Free State".
Regards to all
