According to Vol.3 of "The Playgoer and Society Illustrated" (circa 1908), the Major's family had a very lengthy lineage. After a lengthy trawl through Society Notes and Plays, IL was able to ascertain that "A.E.Wrottesley of the Engineers" was lost overboard near Teneriffe". There was no other information given that I could find. Given high seas, an unsecured man on deck took an awful risk.
Regards
IL.
