The WW1 memorial in Beddgelert, Caernarvonshire (now Gwynedd), has the name of Robert D. Jones added.

The only "R.D.Jones" in the Palmer roll is "25741 Pte. R.D.Jones of 5th I.Y." who was Killed in Action at Klienfontein on 24/10/01. Date does not match the memorial.
Regards

Thank you. I'll contact the Beddgelert History Society and ask if they have any information on this man.

The IY man's first name was Ralph.

The Register shows a Robert David Jones 19th Hussars commemorated on the National War Memorial, Cardiff.

I can't find any trace of this man in the medal rolls, Soldiers Effects, Deaths at Sea, but a search of Welsh Newspapers online shows the Carnarvon and Denbigh Herald for 01-06-1900 reporting the death of Robert David Jones, 19th Hussars the son of Mr Robert Jones of Cae Du. He died of enteric returning from South Africa.

Still need to locate this man in military records.

I did ask at Caernarfon Library if they had back copies of the local newspaper, but no, they're all kept at Gwynedd Archives, at Caernarfon Record Office, and it's only open on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Welsh Newspapers Online has this, probably the same as the Caernarfon paper: -

JOY AND SORROW. - Whilst the villagers were given up to celebrating the relief of Mafeking, on the 19th inst., P.C. David Roberts received a letter from another constable, stationed at Aberystwyth, saying that Mr. Robert David Jones, son of Mr. Robert Jones, Cae Du, had died from enteric fever, on his way from South Africa, where he had been fighting as a member of the 19th Hussars. The rejoicings were considerably damped by this sad news. The Rev. J. Jenkins, the vicar, was asked by Mr. Roberts to go and break the news to deceased's parents.
