The trade of shoeing smith isn’t just “in connection with horses” in civilian life, but along with that of farrier, it was [and farrier still is] a trade qualification within the British Army. Until the phasing out of horse transport after WWI, in addition to cavalry & artillery regiments, engineers, ordnance and service Corps all had farriers & shoeing smiths trades amongst their ranks.

Shoeing Smiths shod horses and knew the Blacksmiths trade, but not all blacksmiths can shoe a horse.
