The cup was originally presented, in 1909, by Edmund Ethelston, in memory of his brother, Commander Alfred Peel Ethelston, who was killed at Graspan.

The cup competition, competed for by teams from Shropshire and Cheshire, raises money for many local charities, and has a hard-working committee which have revitilised the competition in recent years.

My thanks to Kim Marchbank-Smith, one of the members of the Commander Ethelston Charity Cup Committee, for helping me get to see this magnificent memorial, which is on display in Whitchurch, Shropshire

It's a wonderful memorial because it's still relevant and being put to good use, over a hundred years later. Plus it helps keep the Commander's name in the public eye. As a trophy, it's superb, and to actually win it on the day and hold it aloft must be a great feeling.

Whisper it quietly, but, if I remember correctly, it's more valuable than the F.A. Cup.

I actually read of the Commander Ethelston Charity Cup occasionally on my Shropshire days out, when I bought a copy of the Shropshire Star newspaper, but that was before my interest in the ABW really began, and I couldn't have made the connection then.

I agree, a cracker - excellent find Berenice. What a splendid trophy.

A fitting memorial for the 2,000 ABW memorial I have recorded.
