From the Eton College Chronicle, Thursday 2nd November 1905 MEMENTOTE : IN : DOMINO : ETONENSIUM : PRO : PATRIA : BELLO : AFRICANO : DEFUNCTORUM : MDCCCXCIX—MDCCCCII : SEPULTORUM : IN : PACE : NOMINA : IN : AETERNUM : SUPERSUNT “ Methinks that a death such as theirs has been gives the true measure of a man’s worth ; it may be the first revelation of his virtues, but is at any rate their final seal. For even those who come short in other ways may justly plead the valour with which they have fought for their country ; they have blotted out the evil with the good, and have benefited the state more by their public services than they have injured her by their private actions. “ None of these men were enervated by wealth or hesitated to resign the pleasures of life ; none of them put off the evil day in the hope, natural to poverty, that a man though poor may one day become rich .... “ They resigned to hope their unknown chance of happiness ; but in the face of death they resolved to rely upon themselves alone. And when the moment came they were minded to resist and suffer, rather than to fly and save their lives ; they ran away from the word of dishonour, but on the battlefield their feet stood fast, and in an instant, at the height of their fortune, they passed away from the scene, not of their fear, but of their glory.” Thucydides ii. 42. “Not once or twice in our fair island-story, The path of duty was the way to glory : He, that ever following her commands, On with toil of heart and knees and hands, Thro’ the long gorge to the far light has won His path upward, and prevail’d, Shall find the toppling crags of Duty scaled Are close upon the shining table-lands To which our God Himself is moon and sun.” Tennyson, Ode on the death of the Duke of Wellington. “ We welcome back our bravest and our best;— Ah me ! not all! some come not with the rest, Who went forth brave and bright as any here!. . . . In these brave ranks I only see the gaps, Thinking of dear ones whom the dumb turf wraps.... I with uncovered head Salute the sacred dead, Who went, and who return not.—Say not so ! ’T is not the grapes of Canaan that repay, But the high faith that failed not by the way ; Virtue treads paths that end not in the grave ; No bar of endless night exiles the brave.” Lowell, Harvard Commemoration Ode,. DEATH OF MAJOR ANTHONY RALLI.
The news of the death of Major Anthony Ralli, of the 12th Lancers, who succumbed to enteric fever at Kroonstadt, was received in Rhyl by telegraph this week. Of the four Rallis who went to South Africa, there are now only two remaining. The deceased's father was Prime Minister of Greece during the Graeco-Turkish war. Great sympathy is felt with Mr. M. A. Ralli, J.P., late High Sheriff of Flintshire, a near relative of the deceased. The North Wales Times, 2nd June 1900

That 'Roll of Honour' must be the most impressive one in terms of the officer class in any school chapel. It must have always been so for Eton College's alumni in Victoria's wars.

Love where research takes you. I can only trace two Rallis involved in the ABW - AS Ralli and EL Ralli Trooper Middlesex IY. I assume they are brothers. EL Ralli went to Oxford, enlisted as a "gentleman trooper" in the first contingent. In WW1 he enlisted in the ranks of the Royal Navy, but was commissioned into the RFA and won an MC; a modest man I think with no pretensions but great ability. Perhaps the other two Rallis in SA were civilians? Researcher & Collector
