Pete,
Many thanks for posting this information about Dai. I really did not know that there could be more than one entry to the Register of Deceased Soldiers Effects.
Cheers Steve

Kenneth,
In answer to your questions I offer the following;

Firstly, I make the amendment that his original name was David Jones, rather than Daffydd. The screenshot above is s taken from the account of his life on Wikipedia, which states that he was formerly known as David Jones.
I believe he used Fai St. John during his mountain fighting days.

The above mentioned reference is from the excellent thread posted on this Anglo Boer War Forum by contributor Berenice. If you haven't already, please take a look at this thread. You will find numerous references from newspapers of the time concerning his pugilistic prowess and his military life.

The above trio of medals is currently up for auction at Aubrey's saleroom. Though they are not to a Grenadier Guardsman, this is what I would expect Dai's medal group to consist of.
From the left we have;
Queen's Sudan medal
Queen's South Africa medal (Dai would be entitled to the single clasp BELMONT as you know).
Khedive's Sudan medal with the single clasp KHARTOUM.

If anyone on the forum has any further information please post up.

Cheers Steve

Medal rolls on Ancestry confirm entitlement to Dai St John of Queen's Sudan and Khedive's Sudan clasp Khartoum.

These are the medals as passed down by my grandfather, David's brother. As I said earlier, the handle on the jug has been broken ever since I can remember.

To all those responding, please understand that I am not versed in this. My grandparents and mother emigrated from Wales to the US in 1913. I currently reside in Georgia.

The Wikipedia article appears to cite the book by Lawrence Jones as the source for the name David Jones. Looks like I'll have to wait until I get the book to see where he sourced it. Sorry, but my experience on Ancestry has taught me to check, double check and sometimes triple check sources. Once I have the opportunity to check the sourcing in the book, (it may not get here until April) I will post.

Thank you to all who have provided me with information.

Kenneth, terrific you have these treasures. The jug particularly has done well to survive a transatlantic journey.

Thank you for sharing.
