In St Deiniol's churchyard, Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales.

Thomas Rogers Jones, late Pay Sergeant, North Staffordshire Regiment. Died 12th September 1900, aged 33 years.

Also his brother Colour Sergeant John Jones, 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards. Died near Pretoria, South Africa, 5th August 1900, aged 30 years.

Both of these men are named on Hawarden's Boer War memorial, which gives John Jones's place of death as Brugspruit, and Thomas R. Jones's as Hawarden. Neither man's death seems to have been reported in the local press, although Jones isn't an easy name to search for.

According to my copy of "First or Grenadier Guards in South Africa, 1899-1902", Col. Sgt J.Jones served in No.2 Coy, 3GG and his regimental number was 9258. The book gives his date of death as 6/8/00, the place Brugspruit and the cause, pneumonia. Palmer roll agrees.
Regards
IL.
