The roll of honour was originally in Bermondsey Town Hall, was put into storage in the 1960s, and later moved to where the Bermondsey and Southwark war memorial is, in the open air. In early 2014, it was installed in St James's Church, Bermondsey. The maker of the roll, as it originally was, was Reckbell & Son, Bermondsey S.E.

Two names were added after the August, 1903, photo had been taken - W. E. Morlidge and W. James - and three of those named died in South Africa.

Berenice,

A fantastic post which is very useful to anyone tracing their ancestors. It is so helpful (and I fully appreciate time consuming) to transcribe these memorials as you do every time.

I was going to go out for a walk this morning, until I started to prepare this! Once I began, I had to finish.

Hugh Price Travers

"Captain H. P. Travers served in the South African war in 1899-1902, and took part in the action at Elandslaagte, the action at Ladysmith, the defence of Ladysmith, including the action of 6th January 1900. After the relief of Ladysmith, served with the 5th Dragoon Guards in Northern Natal and the Wakerstroom district. In 1901 appointed Brigade Signalling Officer to Brigadier General Gilbert Hamilton's Brigade, and took part in the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)'s operations in the Eastern and Western Transvaal and the Orange River Colony. Afterwards appointed Brigade Signalling Officer to Colonel Keir's Column, and took part in the operations in the Western Transvaal (Medal with four Clasps, King's Medal with two Clasps)."

Lieutenant H. P. Travers, Imperial Yeomanry, was on board the Nubia, when it docked at Southampton on 8th October 1901.
Lieutenant H. P. Travers, 5th Dragoon Guards, was on board the Templemore when it left Port Natal for England, on 31st July 1902.

His nephew, Tim Travers, professor of history at the University of Calgary, researched and wrote a book, 'Gallipoli' - Hugh Price Travers was killed in action there. The website 'Dungannon War Dead' draws on the book for information and photos relating to Hugh's life and death.

I am just adding the names on the Bermondsey memorial to the record on the IWM WMR.

Are the 1st Service Section and 2nd Service Section sub-units of another unit or are they units in their own right?
