This photograph illustrates the practical sympathy which the Greeks feel towards us in our present troubles in South Africa. The obelisk was erected in the Cathedral of the Orthodox Church, in Patras, in front of the iconostatis, at the Requiem Mass which was held to commemorate the British soldiers who perished in the war in South Africa.

I have been looking at pictures of St Andrew's Orthodox Church in Patras. There are lots of external views and many similar views of the interior but none that show this memorial.

Could it have been a temporary memorial, only lasting until the end of the war? Or perhaps it was destroyed when German and Italian forces occupied Patras during WW2.

The pic from The Graphic rang a bell. In Vol.III (p.57) of TH is a reference to the Greek support for the British cause during the ABW. It appears there was a cenotaph at Larissa as well.

...."The Bishop of Patras, Greece, having prohibited the holding of a mass for the repose of souls of English soldiers and others who have fallen in the war in South Africa, the matter was brought up in the Chamber, and gave rise to an animated discussion. The Minister of Public Worship explained that the Bishop's prohibition was solely of a religious character, the Orthodox Greek Church not allowing any ceremonies for those belonging to other faiths. Several Deputies, however, protested against the Minister's view, and persisted that the prohibition partook of a political character. M. Theotokis (Premier) repeated the statement made by his colleague that the prohibition was of a strictly religious nature, and, amid loud applause, gave expression to the undying gratitude felt by the Greek nation towards Great Britain."
