....News has been received in Bury of the death of Sergeant John Wild, 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade, son of John Edward Wild, mechanic, now of Openshaw, formerly of Bury. Wild enlisted at Manchester. After being at Winchester and Dublin he went to Malta, where, after four years' service, served in the Khartoum campaign, was present at the massacre in Crete, reached Durban on October 26th, detraining to the battlefield, and was killed at Ladysmith on January 6th during the Boer assault.
The Manchester Times, Friday 2nd February 1900

PATHETIC WAR INCIDENT.
....Mr. Sidney Smelt, the Manchester coroner, held an inquest, yesterday morning, on the body of John Edward Wild, aged 48, of 84, Ogden-lane, Higher Openshaw, who was a fitter, employed at the Great Central Railway Works, Gorton.—In the evidence a most pathetic story in connection with the war was told. Three weeks ago deceased heard that his son had been fatally shot through the neck on January 6th at Ladysmith. The lad was in the 2nd Rifle Brigade, and in six years he had risen to the rank of sergeant. In consequence of this sad news the father became greatly depressed, and whilst at work on Thursday he borrowed a pocket knife with which he said he wanted to cut some wood. He then went into the iron yard and cut his throat, and was discovered shortly afterwards lying quite dead in a pool of blood.—A verdict of "Suicide whilst insane" was returned.
