Putting a Face & Story to a Name on a War Memorial:

"Lieutenant Colonel John Moore Gawne, 2nd Battalion the King's Own Regiment. He was the son of Edward Moore Gawne, the Speaker of the House of Keys on the Isle of Man, and Emily Maria Gawne (nee Murray). He was born at Kentraugh, Rushen, on the Isle of Man. He had nine siblings. He was educated at Lieutenant Shaw's School in Douglas on the Isle of Man, Cheltenham College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the 4th Foot in June 1874. He married Theodora Roscoe at the Holy Trinity Church, Chelsea on 30 Jun 1886. They had 4 children. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 13 Jun 1875, to Captain on 28 May 1884, Major on 26 Jun 1893, and Lieutenant Colonel in Feb 1900. He served in the Zulu War 1879, receiving the medal with clasp, and also with the Bechuanaland Expedition under Sir Charles Warren 1884-85. During the Second Anglo Boer War 1899-1902, the Kings Own Regiment at Vryheid were suddenly attacked on a dark morning at 2.15 am and a desperate fight ensued. The troops heroically held their own, and the Boers abandoned the attack towards evening, but Lieutenant Colonel Gawne was wounded. He died the next day and was buried in Vryheid cemetery."

Looking for the SS Jelunga (Transport Ship No 7) led me to the above. Here is John Moore Gawne in 1897 when he was a Major, plus his family.

Group of officers of the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment and their families on board SS Jelunga sailing from Malta to Hong Kong in 1897.
Left to right: Captains Woodgate and G L Hibbert, Lieutenants Fletcher, J H Morrah, J H Lloyd, F S B Johnson, R N Dobson, Galloway, Captain J A Paton, Lieutenant R G Parker, Captain D M McLachlan, Lieutenant & Quartermaster T Batchelor, Lieutenants W A L Lethbridge, W B Molony, Major T C F Somerville, Lieutenant R E J Donajowski, Major W H Duffin, Major J M Gawne, Captain W Sandback and Lieutenant Whittington.
Sitting, Colonel J Rowlandson, Mrs Rowlandson, Mrs Gawne, with Donald, Mrs Batchelor, Mrs Duffin and on ground Miss Lancelyn Gawne and Master Tommy Batchleor.

Did the barely visible Captain Woodgate become Major General E R P Woodgate - the lack of initials means we cannot be certain. Also was Lieutenant Whittington the Lieutenant T D L Whittington on the War Memorial? We can say G L Hibbert, J H Morrah, F S B Johnson, R N Dobson, J A Paton, R G Parker, W A L Lethbridge, W B Molony, W H Duffin, & W Sandbach also served in the Boer War.

We can also say that John Moore Gawne'a wife, Theodora, had a very long widowhood as she never remarried and died in 1942. His daughter Lancelyn (5 years old in the photo) was a VAD overseas in WWI and received the British War & Victory Medals,
