The plaque was originally in the Military Church at Canterbury Barracks, Kent, until 1908, when the regiment left the city. It's now in the Army Museum, York, behind what may be plate glass.

Very unusual for an ABW memorial - if not unique - in that it has added to it the names of men of the 7th Dragoons who died in Canterbury between 1904-1908, and also the names of three children, all boys, who presumably also died in Canterbury post-war., except that I couldn't find a record of the death of Alfred August Hoffman in England and Wales between 1904 to 1908.

Wondering why the 7th Dragoons have a nameless Boer War Memorial Plaque in Norwich Cathedral as well - were they ever based there?

Photo by Adrian S Pye on the "Geograph" website - the text shows a nearby stained glass window is also dedicated to them.

From 'The 7th Dragoon Guards in the First World War' :— "The regiment returned to Britain from France in March 1919 and was stationed at Norwich."
www.researchingww1.co.uk/7th-princess-royals-dragoon-guards

They also seem to have been stationed there in the early 1870s :— www.mediastorehouse.com.au/fine-art-find...guards-22502632.html

The Eastern Daily Press 17th November 1904 reports the dedication of the 7th Dragoon Guards Boer War Memorial in Norwich Cathedral along with the the Norfolk Boer War Memorial in the grounds.

www.britishempire.co.uk/forces/armyunits/britishcavalry/7dg.htm

The above link leads to a very readable and concise but informative history of the 7th Dragoon Guards up to the end of the Boer War. It reports that the 7th Dragoon Guards moved to Norwich in 1895 but had moved to Aldershot by the time they received the call to fight in the Boer War.

This explains why my only Smethwickian who served in the 7th Dragoon Guards married a Norwich Lady in Norwich.
