....Of the officers who are stated to have been wounded, Yorkshiremen, in particular, will learn, with great regret, of the misfortune which has overtaken Colonel John Gerald Wilson, C.B. He is reported to be in a dangerous condition. In spite of advancing years - he is sixty-one - this officer recently took up his sword again for active service at the front after over thirty years' comparative retirement from military life.
....A follower of hounds, a cricketer, and a good sportsman in every sense, Colonel Wilson belongs to one of the oldest families in Yorkshire. Over 150 years ago his ancestors settled at Cliffe hall, Darlington, the residence of the present wounded officer.
....He is the son of Mr. Richard Bassett Wilson, brother-in-law of Sir Lucius O'Brien, of Adelphi, county Clare. He was educated at Cheltenham and Sandhurst.
....Colonel Wilson has been connected with the volunteer and militia forces of Yorkshire for nearly thirty years. He is Colonel and Brigadier-general, commanding the West Yorkshire volunteer infantry brigade, and Lieutenant-colonel and Honorary Colonel commanding the 3rd battalion of the York and Lancaster regiment.
....He formerly served in the 84th Regiment, which is now the second battalion of the regiment whose third battalion he leads, and retired with the rank of captain in 1867.
....He married in 1873, a daughter of the Hon. and Rev. Henry O'Brien, brother of the thirteenth Lord Inchiquin. Colonel Wilson has done good service in the northern county, of which he is a deputy-lieutenant, as magistrate and as county alderman.
The Cornishman, Thursday 13th March 1902

C.B. is Companion of the Order of the Bath. Colonel Wilson is also named on Cheltenham College's memorial.

In addition to details of Colonel J.G.Wilson's background and service, Palmer tells us that, in the course of the war, he lost a brother (Col. Richard B. Wilson, Died of Disease at Kroonstad 21/3/01 with 3rd Bn., Durham L.I.) and a son (2nd Lt., Richard B. Wilson, wounded at Olifant's Nek with the 3rd. I.Y. and died of wounds 0n 26/7/00).
Palmer records Colonel J.G.Wilson as being dangerously wounded at Klip Drift on 7/3/02 and died the next day of wounds received in action "between Tweebosch and Palmietkull".
Klip Drift indicates the disaster at Tweebosch; where Methuen's column of mixed all-sorts was overwhelmed by De La Rey. Col. J.G.Wilson's Regt. (3rd Y@L) is not shown in Maurice as being present at Tweebosch/Klip Drift and SAFF shows only the Colonel and a Drummer Ward of 3rd Y@L as being fatal casualties at that place on that day. Perhaps Col. J.G.Wilson was temporarily serving with 1st NF or Loyal North Lancs?
Regards
IL.
