One of the 44 named on the Pembrokeshire Boer War Memorial is buried in the Jac Coetzer Street Cemetery in Winburg. He died of disease in Winburg Hospital on 11th October 1900. The Cemetery can be found on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, the CWGC have taken over responsibility for maintaining the cemetery but have not yet listed the names of the occupants. There are half a dozen photos of which two below – just wondering if there are any close ups of the names on the memorial and/or individual grave markers?

My man is Lance-Corporal 4113 Arthur Bowlas Summers, 30th (Pembrokeshire) Company, 9th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry. His posthumous QSAM had two clasps – Cape Colony & OFS.

He was born at Rosemoor Farm, Walwyn’s Castle, Pembrokeshire on 26th September 1868 and was the 11th of 15 children, only one of whom died in infancy. He was typical of the first wave IY as his father was a gentlemen farmer and a Justice of the Peace. His mother was born in Canada although her parents were Cornish. Her father served in the Royal Artillery and for about 20 years was in charge of the Ordnance Stores in Quebec. When he left the army the family settled in Pembrokeshire.

Rosemoor Farm still stands and the outhouses have been converted into luxury holiday cottages.
