The Heidelberg Commando Memorial, Heidelberg Kloof Cemetery, Fenter Street

These men were re-interred during a ceremony held on 17th October 1903. Generals Louis Botha, C.R. de Wet, Jan Smuts, J. Kemp, C.H. Muller, P.R. Viljoen, A.H. Alberts and C. Brits were all present at the reburial.

Vdk. Van As, was executed by the British on 23 June 1902, three weeks after the end of hostilities. A few years after the war Van As's father received a letter from the British Government admitting that the conviction of his son had been a miscarriage of justice. The family was therefore able to claim compensation. Van As's father declined to take advantage this offer.
