I have a soldier of the Shropshire L.I., who died at The Royal Victoria Hospital Netley, on the 7 August 1900 Pte, J. or T. Philtrip 3130, or 3430, 2nd Shropshire L.I.,
The medal roll for the 2nd Shropshire L.I., for South African medal states the following
PTE. T. PHILTRIP, 3430, Returned to England 10 April 1900,
the following is a newspaper report stating that 3130, Pte. J. Philtrip, invalided from South Africa died at Netley August 7 1900
all avenues have failed to find him, have I missed something any help greatly appreciated
kind regards Philip
Happy New Year

Hello Philip
Just to add to the confusion, Watts in Memoriam records.

I noticed 2 Philtrips on the medal roll. However, I'm fairly confident that 3430 T Philtrip is your man. Not sure why A has been transcribed? alas, errors in handwriting often occurred. The other Philtrip on the roll was a 2252 R Philtrip. He was a Corporal and reduced in the ranks at Bloemfontein under a section 19 in March 1901. On first trawl I could not find any details on your man. Will have a good look through the files this weekend. I will of course keep you updated if I find anything relevant.

Very little to report unfortunately. I don't think Private Philtrip was a Shropshire Lad.
I have had no luck searching for a Philtrip family reference Shropshire.
Perhaps our forum colleague Smethwick could use his magic, reference the newspaper archives?. The only glimmer of a contender I could find was a chap with the initial A.....Alfred Philtrip. The age and date are close. However, it is a long shot that this could be your man.

Dave with regards to Philtrip 2252, Shropshire L.I., I did see in his record that he had a younger brother called Alfred ?
might be our man
